Preparing for a new puppy can be a fun, and at the same time exhausting process.  Puppies require a lot of attention and have special needs for the first six months to one year of their lives.  Here are a few items you will need to accommodate your new puppy.puppy

~Dog crate: your puppy needs a place to sleep and feel safe, in addition you need a place to put your puppy when you can’t pay attention to them. Be sure to purchase some dog crate mats to ensure your canine is comfy.

~Dog bed: whether placing it inside the crate or somewhere else, puppies need to keep warm, and they will also associate the bed with where they should sleep later in life.

~Leash, harness and collar: these are the essential tools for taking your puppy for walks and for teaching them how to walk with people.

~Chew toys: puppies like to chew on things, give them something to chew on so that they don’t go for your furniture or shoes.

~Puppy food and treats: of course they need to eat, and you want to reward your puppy for good behavior with treats.

dog matsAn old blanket on the floor for a dog mat is a thing of the past. Rover doesn’t just get his own special mat with colorful dog-related print fabric these days, his mat can also be temperature-controlled if his person so chooses.

Temperature-controlled dog mats are a smart choice, particularly for older dogs. Some temperature-controlled dog mats are simply heated, as with an electric blanket.  Other dog mats of this type are more versatile, allowing for coolness in summer and warmth in winter.

dog crate padsOne of the most important things to purchase when you’re welcoming a new puppy into your home is a dog crate. The dog crate acts as not only a place where your puppy can sleep, but a place where they can feel safe in a foreign location. When buying a dog crate, first make sure it’s big enough to last through at least the first year of the dog’s life. It’s not uncommon for puppies to double in size in the first year. You will also want to buy blankets or dog crate pads so that your puppy stays warm and comforted.

Whatever kind of dog crate you decide to buy, you will want to ensure that it is fully closed and locked when the puppy is in it.  If one of the clasps is loose for example, your puppy could press against the crate door and catch their foot in it.

Intergrating A New Dog Into The Household

westpawNATURE_NAP_GROUPWhen bringing home a new dog, it is important to introduce her into the household in a way that makes her and any existing pets feel secure. Have your new dog meet any established pets, particularly other dogs, on neutral territory. Have them meet on the street on leash and walk together with the width of the road between them for a few days until they are quite familiar with each other. Bring them into the home one at a time, preferably with the new dog inside first and then the other. If things look a bit iffy, put your new girl into her own room gated but with the door open so they can see and smell and hear each other. It is also a good idea to get a crate for your new pet so she has her own safe place to retreat to when she wants. The crate door can be left open with a nice cozy crate mat to snuggle up on if things get hairy-no pun intended!

Dog Crate Mats for Comfort

dog crate matsSometimes, simply buying a crate isn’t enough. Some dogs, based on their age and overall sensitivity, may need dog crate mats to make their enclosed space a tad bit more comfortable. While some pet owners think that old towels and used shirts are enough, I think that if that dog were a person, sleeping on an old MC Hammer shirt would be as comfortable as sleeping on the pavement.

Dog crate mats can be found at some pet stores, but specialty retail sites online have massive selections that can suite a dog’s specific size and personality. Don’t be a cheap-o and let your pup sleep on an old “2 Legit 2 Quit” tour shirt, otherwise, you’ll find that your dog won’t be “2 Legit” to be a little salty at you.
